"Walter, hit it!"
This great last line of dialog in Stargate: Ark of Truth ends what was a perfect cap to the ten year run of Stargate SG-1. For now anyway.
Review Score: 4.5 paws out of 5.
Synopsis from The Official MGM Website:
Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell, Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson, Vala Mal Doran and the alien, Tealc, all members of the elite Stargate SG-1 team, travel to the ruins of Dakara in hopes of finding the fabled Ark of Truth. Built by the Alterans, (builders of the stargates), millions of years before, this ancient artifact may be the sole means remaining to defeat the Ori armies who have thus far proven unstoppable in their quest to conquer the universe in the name of their religion, Origin.
This past weekend I got the chance to watch a Special Screening Copy of the new Stargate SG-1 DVD movie. And yes, I did feel special. Guba lasted 25 minutes in the movie which, face it, was 24 minutes longer than I expected.
Stargate SG-1 has stopped production of the TV Series but has moved into direct to DVD episodes. Stargate: Ark of Truth is hopefully just the first of these DVDs.
Stargate: Ark of Truth does for Stargate SG-1 what Serenity did for Firefly. Closes off all of the open plots succinctly and keeps their ardent fans happy. Fortunately in Stargate SG-1's case it left open the path for more DVDs to come.
The production values are similar to what we would see in the TV show as is most of the writing and plot. This is good as most of the same individuals are involved and the humour and team camaraderie between team members is still there. The introduction fly by scene is definitely one that would not have appeared in the TV show. Length and cost being the main factors. It is always possible to ruin the tone of a TV series by changes in style from TV production to movie production. Stargate avoids this and manages to create a longer version of a typical TV episode. A design choice that I appreciated and enjoyed. All I wanted was more Stargate SG-1 and that's what they gave me, Thanks guys!
Fans get to see what happened with the anti-Ori bomb and experience a typical story line along with a visit from an old nemesis (which I wouldn't want to ruin here by posting a spoiler).
The DVD had an interesting feature where you could watch the film with or without a prologue recapping season ten and the Ori storyline. I watched it anyway because I wanted the refresher.
If you are a Stargate SG-1 fan this is a must buy. If you aren't why in the hell are you still reading this far into the article? Go read something else!
I was surprised by the reaction to leaked copies of the movie appearing on Bittorrent sites. While most of the sites have the movie posted, I read one article asking/warning downloaders to buy the movie once the official DVD is out.
The concern of the author is the continued production of more Stargate SG-1 DVDs. The more successful the sales of Stargate: Ark of Truth are the more Stargate SG-1 DVDs we will see.
Seems simple enough and logical. Enough so that I am planning on giving away my Special Screening Copy and buying the final version once it is available.
The official release date for Stargate: Ark of Truth is March 11th, 2008.
