Wilson? Is that you?
Well, no, of course it isn't. It is just the marker Dead Island Riptide uses to show areas where you can climb down. Because the flashing whites lianas or handholds aren't enough. To be fair it only marks these areas from above where it could be harder to see them.
While I am still enjoying Dead Island Riptide I have found that is not as fun as the original in single player. I suspect this is the reason for the average poor reviews – 56% at Gamerankings. (I had to change to poor after I went to Gamerankings to look it up.)
Dead Island Riptide suffers from being too similar to the original Dead Island which, while to be expected, provides a significant let down from players expecting more. It was clearly stated that Dead Island Riptide was not supposed to be Dead Island 2 so we did get the game that was promised.
Some things were fixed in game but essentially Dead Island Riptide provides a new story, a new character and a new island but little more. The game play is generally the same. The graphics aren't a huge improvement nor is the interface.
So. It's more Dead Island more of what everyone wanted yet... that same general sameness is it's undoing.
Dead Island Riptide is fun in a group playing co-op.
As a single player game? Too much sameness, not enough fun.
So I will still be playing Dead Island Riptide but only when someone else is online. This isn't bad necessarily but falls victim to the same problem as the original Dead Island. So very close to a AAA title but just not quite.
For reference here is the original Wilson:
