Grand Theft Auto IV

I wasn't really interested until...

So I don't buy Grand Theft Auto games. I played one of them. Vice City I think. I borrowed it off of Snuffy D for a while. The game type was okay but there was never any multiplayer.

However Crackdown is one of my favourite Xbox 360 games ever and it was basically a Grand Theft Auto clone. It was an awesome open world game with multiplayer and one of three games that I played past the 50 hour mark. Crackdown is the only game where I have all available achievement points (1250 including the DLC).

Still, the point here is that I had no interest in Grand Theft Auto IV despite all the previews I have read. Even with it being the only major new release in April.

Until now. Now I have a little interest. A little. Why? Because the Official Xbox Magazine ran an article on Grand Theft Auto IV multiplayer modes. And I discovered that it is an open world game with multiplayer – 16 player multiplayer. Here is a little more info:

  • 16 player open world sand box mode. Just run around and do what you want. This was entertaining in Crackdown with only two players. I expect 16 will be a zoo, but a fun zoo.
  • Checkpoint racing. Run, walk, drive, fly from point to point. Switch cars, switch vehicles, cause blockades, rocket the leader, steal a chopper and shoot apart the other racers from the sky.
  • 4 player co-op. A VIP mode where you have to get your mob leader across the map while fighting off the Liberty City police Force.
  • Did I not mention the police? The police are always around and chase you if you break the law (and you will) in multiplayer as well. With civilians and traffic. It's an occupied open world
  • Deathmatch and team deathmatch
  • In one mode a mob leader sends you and the opposing team on the same missions. You have to beat them as well as fight off the police.
  • Cops and Robbers mode. You have to make a getaway while protecting your VIP or be the cops and try to take down the VIP.

It seems that Rockstar delayed the November launch date until April just to work on the multiplayer. Claiming that if they are adding multiplayer to Grand Theft Auto IV that it is going to be done right.

So the status of Grand Theft Auto IV has moved from ignore, to might buy. What I would like is an idea of whcih other Herd memembers are interested. Are any of you already planning to buy it? Are you thinking about it? Or will it never happen? Is the multiplayer news likely to influence your decision?

Because I would hate to buy a multiplayer game and then have no one to play with...

Since my birthday gift card says "For GTA IV only", I don't have much choice...

It sounds like GTA-IV has all of the missing elements of Burnout: Paradise City. I too was a GTA franchise avoider, but with the descriptions that you have mentioned, this is Burnout with guns. And we have spent a large amount of time playing Burnout, now if we add guns to the mix, this could be a very fun game.

Would still have to do the single player story just to get the achievements of course.

The one thing that keeps bugging me about playing Burnout is the constant, overwhelming urge to get out of my car and beat Revek savagely about the head with a baseball bat.

MauriceRevek's picture

Now you can. Not only can you take me out of my car and beat me sensless with a baseball bat, but you can point an uzi in the window, and just fire away. Or fire ATG missils from your attack chopper at my car from a nice safe distance and watch my car do cartwheels in the air.

But why limit yourself to only shooting at me? With the new Hot Bert patch, you will be able to shoot at me while ducking naked Q-Berts running around painted in red.

Or the Hot Walt patch, where anything you say will be corrected immediatly, all the while blinding you with the 25000 candle reflection from the top of his head.

Or the Hot Adumay patch where there will be an annoying gnat flying around you screaming GAY GAY GAY in your ear.

Or the Hot Blade.... Hot Storm.... Hot Blorm.. Yeah, that one is better. Hot Blorm patch where the game will stop at the most unnoportune moments with the message: gotta get some beer, whith a picture if a giant bird flipping hand splashed on your screen.

Or the Hot Sorz patch.... I guess that one speeks for itself, and requires no further embelishment.

We must own this game!!!

Of course, I hope I won't be required to do 'team' things to complete challenges because the odds are I will be spending every freaking moment hunting Revek down.

Here Revek, Revek, Revek ...

The game will be coming out while I am in the Bahamas SCUBA diving with the sharks and tanning on a catamaran. So you will have at least a week hear start on me.

Just give us your Xbox before you go. We'll buy the game, run it on your system, and take pictures of your battered corpse.

And there is some sort of problem with this?

Akuf's picture

you really put a lot of thought into that post...

Or this something that you have always felt and are now coming out with it?
