Put in your bets!
I have been waiting for a year now for the iPhone to be made available in Canada. My neighbour, the gadget guy, couldn't wait and bought an unlocked iPhone on eBay and is pretty happy with it, except he doesn't use the data capabilities when he is away from his house (seems a heafty Rogers bill in the first month cut that soon enough).
Will I purchase an iPhone tomorrow ?
Well, I am 50/50 on it. On one hand, the original plans that Rogers announced were a total rip-off. That prompted quite a uproar from the Canadian geeks. At the very last moment, Rogers seems to have backed-pedaled.. The keen observer will notice that even with these new cheaper plans, there is still no Unlimited data-plan. I was still miffed about it until I realized that in the US, AT&T has defined "Unlimited" to actually be "5Gigs-and-then-we-cut-you-off".
The funny things is that my employer will pay the monthly fees, and I just need to purchase the phone itself. At $299CDN for the phone (16Gigs model), this is pretty much a steal for me. I haven't payed anything for my phones in the past 5 years (Thanks Blackwalt/Rolly!) and I was about to get a GPS this summer anyways, so my budget can take that amount.
So why is it important for me to pay a low monthly amount ? Ethics, I guess... (Shut your pie-hole, Stormblade) That and if my employer decides to let me go, I end up with the remainder of the 3-year contract.

Conversation between two buddies of mine earlier today, this quote though from the 'PC' guy was priceless:
First off I just not a Mac fan. (mac computers == I-phone if you didn't know) And I wouldn't carry so much but the people that are mac fan are also 'Nothing Else Fans' and complain about every other fucking thing ever made.
At least with PC (thats windows to you), you know that the most annoying part about it is the operating system and not the user.
This was probably the only time I typed LOL and was actually laughing out loud.
As long as your chores are done tomorrow morning, that includes mowing the lawn... you can go and buy your i-phone.
... Rogers didn't tell anyone that today is for NEW ROGERS CUSTOMERS ONLY.
The existing unhappy Rogers customers get to PERHAPS have the POSSIBILITY of MAYBE being able to BEG for an iPhone LATER NEXT WEEK.... dunno exactly when....
Way to piss off your existing clients there....
AND
IF YOU ARE A NEW ROGERS CUSTOMER, HERE WAS YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH ROGERS:
- Wait in line for hours and they let 2 people in the store at a time.
- Rogers network went down as soon as the first iPhone activation was requested.
- It's still not up 5 hours later.
- You cannot activate your iPhone, so you have a nice looking brick.
- Rogers sells you that precious $30month/6Gigs package but completely forgets to mention that Visual Voice Mail is $15 extra per month. And I really mean "forget to mention".... Most people have to go back to the store to ask WTF when they look at their contract, to which Rogers say "OOoops, we forgot to sell you that".
Don't all phones already notify you if there's a voicemail message?
go the Rogers store and say 'Will I be considered a new customer if I cancel my service immediately'. That often gets the attention. I know that threat doesn't carry allot of wieght if you have some silly 2 year contract with them. That s why I hate to sign up for contracts.
From all I have gathered today was supposed to be a big day for Rogers, but its getting very bad press all the way through this. The caved a little with the pricing, but they are still way out there compared to the other parts of the world.
I personally like my IPod touch and think I can live with it and a normal cell phone, or Blackberry. Maybe I'll wait till the touch screen blackberry comes out before I sign any contracts.
You can wait for the return of the TRS-80 as well.
Ahh yes, wasn't it obvious from the start that this was going to happen. Not only is Rogers a totally shit cell phone provider to begin with, but for some really stupid ass idea Apple let only them have the iPhone in Canada. (because of money of course, it always is)
I have always been a Samsung fan and their new Samsung Instinct is getting great reviews. You might want to check that out instead, plus Bell AND Telus will be carrying them.
Options people, options. Thats the key.
Actually, the reason it had to be Rogers was they have the only GSM network in Canada and the iPhone is only GSM. Otherwise, I am certain Apple would have chosen someone else.
As far as I know, Rogers is still the only provider in Canada that have the network on which the iPhone can work. Has this changed?
Rogers is the only network capable.
That being said...yeah go ahead go to telus and bell and let them charge you for received txts including spam!
Frankly, if I receive a single piece of spam txt, and I have to pay for it. Let's just say someone is going to have broken kneecaps the next morning. ESPACIALLY, if it is spam from Telus themselves.
period.
Contracts are for suckers.
You go, Pebbles!!
I was planning to buy one, but AT&T will make me re-up for another 2-year contract. I have no intention of being here another two years, so I basically have to wait until I get back home.
Crap.
My old, busted, slow Treo will have to do.
Sigh ...
That you will be allowed to stay? Oh, and the IRS is targeting all Canadian citizens now.
Buy US iPhone, cancel contract when you leave, sell in Canada for big $$$.
The phone companies here may own a good piece of the pie of the telecoms in Canada. They also have collection agencies that will strike in the middle of the night. They are not nice people. That is why I love VoIP!
