PS3 or Stand Alone Bluray player?
Which would you choose?
If you have a BR Player or PS3
Tell me what you think about whatever it is that you have.
I am considering getting one eventually.
PS3 seems more viable because I can also play MSG4 (which is probably the only game worth getting on it)
Let me know

...unless you watch movies off your PC - then i'm with Coxxorz - get the combo HD/BR player/recorder - it's like $250.00 - cheaper and more versatile (media wise) than the ps3(record your own BR's, play hd dvd's too) - but if none of tha floats your boat then def get a ps3...
avoid taking a job from graybush unless you get the fine print up front... ;(
The picture on the PS3 compares to machines far more expensive (for BD's and DVD's). It does media like the 360 but also has a web browser so you can login to HoC and bitch about your Xbox dying without getting off the couch.
The only reason I would possibly recommend a different machine is if you needed 7.1 analog audio outputs. Otherwise PS3's a clear winner.
p.s. if you want MGS4 I'll sell you mine for a fair price...
Actually that brings up another interesting question.
My receiver does have analog inputs but it also has optical/coax digital inputs as well.
Curious about the decoders built into the stand alones does it decode the 7.1 out of both analog and optical?
Thanks graybush...I think that is the route (PS3) I will go eventually. I hoping the price will drop < $300 but with the 160gb version just released unlikely.
Neither optical or coax will pass the decoded DolbyTrue/DTS-HD but HDMI will. So just buy a new receiver along with a PS3... it's only money.
OR...
I could hire you on at Bleeker part-time so you can earn extra cash for toys like Hardwood's doing. Wait, I might have to fire Hardwood to make that work.... okay, just let me know.
at Bleeker??
That is pretty funny I probably talked to you many times (Assuming you're in Ottawa). In fact I was there recently looking for Digital Video Essentials.
Now back to the topic...yeah I figured that much. What I find amusing though is the optical out on most TVs only do stereo. On mine for example the manual it even says to plug the optical directly to the receiver if you want 5.1, 6.1, 7.1.
My sound is still pretty good though. Eventually I will upgrade to the Harmon Kardon (or something comparable) I have been eying for the last year or so.
And house renovations are priority at the moment.
If you shop at Best Buy instead, there are some online coupons:
$10 OFF $100 CODE:RZOFFER1148925677275
$20 OFF $350 CODE: RZOFFER2148944310247
$100 OFF $1000 CODE: RZOFFER3148962943218
So $100 off your receiver, unless your buddy can get you a better deal.
Doesn't carry Harmon Kardon much to my chagrin
Besides the deal would be much more than $100 from my buddy.
some of those guys at bleekers are shifty. Don't buy stuff from commission salespeople if you don't have to (especially from me. I'm liable to sell you a bridge made of wooden nickels).
You should come to the Kanata store have espresso with Hardwood and I and talk about all the stuff you shouldn't buy from us.
mean Futureshop right?
Well I have a connection at futureshop on Merivale.
I guess you work at the Kanata location which until now I did not know existed.
I highly doubt you will be able to sell me a bridge made of wooden nickels. But if you make it out of paper quarters I may consider it. :p
Just to be clear I'm at the Bleeker's in Kanata and I did hire Hardwood though he doesn't really "work" (sigh). Come to think of it even his coffee needs some improvement. I still love you Hardwood...
I was serious about commision salespeople but I fibbed about the bridge (I don't really have one to sell). I'm also serious about having espresso, I never joke about coffee. Or beer for that matter.
The reason I got confused: I mentioned Futureshop and you also warned me about the commissioned salespeople at Bleeker, I assumed you meant Futureshop. Further, since you work at Bleeker you were basically warning me not to trust you....interesting..
But if you have to choose one, give the business to the crooks you know.
Who uses TV speakers, anyway? I wish they made TV's without them, so I can fit a bigger set in my living room.
Don't forget that 6.1 and 7.1 existed prior to the HD disc formats, using DTS-ES and Dolby Digital EX. All you need is an optical connection to pass the bitstream on to your compatible receiver.
Although if more movies used TrueHD, I'd definitely be lobbying to upgrade my trusty old Harman Kardon for the new HK hotness. Which I'd be getting at Bleeker, by the way (I know a guy at the Merivale store too). Stay away from Future Shite.
I'm waiting for more movies with HD sound and then I'll spring for a new receiver. Uncompressed 7.1 is impressive though. Just think of all the movie titles we'll be buying all. over. again.
That's the really painfull part.
6.1 at the moment.
The optical out goes to the receiver from the TV (not using this) I am not using TV speakers I never did.
It would be a combo HD/BR machine.
That's the one thing NOBODY voted for you to do.
mounting it on the ceiling would be a problem because:
1) too much work
2) I think gravity would take over eventually
3) Don't want the members of my harem to know about the hidden cameras.
Ok #3 is lie but It though I would try to be funny.
