While I agree that the inventory system in that game is convoluted and unrealistic, I don't really see how it's a 'stupid' design problem. Sure, some of the items have strange weight values, and you can carry a boat load of stuff. But what other alternative is there? Do you really want to be wondering around the Capital Wasteland with only 3 stim-packs, 2 weapons, 5 clips of ammo, and a pack of bubble gum?
Of course not, that would make the game slow and frustrating, because you'd always have to be going back to a town to resupply after almost every fight. Sure the organizational framework of the inventory system could be improved, but I still think that fallout does a good job of categorizing items for you. I really never had a serious issue with it.
...I am probably the resident Fallout 3 expert on this site.
I will have to agree with Swag (yeah I know, I know).
But I will also tend to agree carrying a Missle Launcher and a Fatman (mini nuke launcher) in the real world would probably be impossible. But hey it is a game at least it does have some kind of limitations. In fact I find it kind of frustrating sometimes when you are 'over encumbered' and have to give up something you don't really want to give up. *SPOILERS* I guess that is why you get the apartment in Telpenny tower (Evil character) or the house in Megaton (good character), guess which one I have :) and you can get them fairly early too so, you can the fast travel back and forth. Though you can not fast travel while 'encumbered' either.
Although you can earn "upgrades" that allow you to carry a few more things at a time. Sure the limit is a pain (and time-consuming to be constantly debating what to discard), but at the same time, how realistic is it to be carrying 40 inventory items and tons of money? I'd almost prefer the option of moving slower once a limit had been reached. Then I'd be more inclined to share cool things I find with other people.
Which reminds me - you playing tonight, Fungster?
Although I'd like to comment as well. It seems that they aren't getting any credit for trying something new, if not groundbreaking with their inventory system. Kudos to them for not following the crowd, and hopefully they learn from the experiment and improve it for the next game.
