Chinese iPhone factory suicide toll hits 10
According to the media, a 23 year old worker at a Foxconn building "fell" from the 7th floor to his death Wednesday, in what initial investigations are indicating was a suicide. Just 12 hours after Chairman Terry Gou apologized for the previous nine deaths at his factories in China.
Mr. Gou, the billionaire founder of Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Group, Wednesday led media on a tour of the company's Shenzhen factories after labour groups said workers toiled under sweatshop conditions. Clients Apple Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. said they're investigating working conditions at the company, and will provide new chains and salves for whip lacerations as needed.
The Financial Post reports:
"The issue cannot be resolved by the management putting on a show in front of the media," said Cheng Yi Yi, project officer at Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior. The Hong Kong-based monitoring organization recommended that there should be a stoppage at Foxconn's Shenzhen plant to allow the company to investigate and remedy the situation, Mr. Cheng said.
Mr. Cheng did not comment on his organization's acronym (SSACM), or how it may confuse labourers (it's pronounced "Sack 'em").
Apple is "saddened and upset" by the suicides and has a team evaluating Hon Hai's countermeasures, Steve Dowling, a spokesman at the Cupertino, Calif.-based maker of iPhones and iPads, said before issuing the order to triple production output of their latest gadget.
Perhaps they should consider installing safety nets around all their buildings.

jumping on the suicide investigation bandwagon.
"The Mario house is reportedly conducting a survey of Foxconn's practices to see if the manufacturer is within those guidelines, although it's unclear what kind of action would be taken if Foxconn fails to meet those standards."
Although somehow I doubt that "Is your boss an overbearing, abusive jerk?" is going to be on this survey.
But frankly, when your company is bigger than most metropolitan cities, there's bound to be a couple sad sausages.
the factory worker accused by Foxconn that he stole a fourth-gen prototype iPhone was the first one committed suicide. Afterward, Foxconn had to settle with that worker's family due to Foxconn official interrogated the worker themself instead of notify the police.
can you really blame them?
