Help me shop for my next TV

By Q-Bert - Posted on 11 December 2010

So, I want to replace my aging CRT television in the living room. We have a small cabinet, so a 32-inch LCD is what I am shopping for.

Here are the requirements:

  • Must connect to my old Tivo.

  • Must connect to my DVD player.

  • Must connect to my Wii console.

  • Would be nice if it connected to my (currently unused) Rogers digital tuner.

Here is the connectors possible on the Tivo:

Currently, I use the RF-out to the CRT TV. I have to check to make sure that the Composite outputs and the S-video output of the Tivo are actually functional. I believe all 32-inch LCDs have coaxial inputs, so I should be fine even if I stick with the coax output connector.

Here are the connectors possible on my DVD player:

So, I can use Component or Composite, or even simply S-video, and push the sound directly to my tuner.

Here are the connectors possible on my Rogers digital tuner:

Here we have Composite, S-video or RF-out connectors.

The Wii has a Y/R/W connector (Composite).

I have a tuner that I like to connect to hear movies, but it is a regular stereo, and not the usual 5.1 surround-sound system... Currently, the tuner is connected to the audio-out of my current CRT TV.

My DVD player is old technology and not Blueray or HD-DVD.

I am not shopping for "a TV to get me to the next decade". I just want to plug in what I already have, not what I expect to have.

So, I am looking for a 32-inch LCD TV, with one of the following connectors sets:

  • 1 coaxial (Tivo), 1 composite (Wii), 1 component (DVD), 1 S-video (Digital tuner)

  • 2 S-video (Tivo and Digital tuner), 1 composite (Wii), 1 component (DVD)

  • 4 composite (all items, wich would look like ass, I'm guessing)

  • Any other combos you can see ?

Here are some possibilities after a few minutes of browsing:

What are your thoughts on the connectors I need, and the TVs I am considering ? You guys could make a case for me getting rid of the DVD player and buying a Blueray with HDMI, but there is no way I will get an HDMI Tivo nor a HDMI Rogers Digital tuner. If I line those up, then I would be looking at an easy grand for the whole thing. Swag, does the Wii support anything else than Composite ?

So it should only have composite.

Almost any tv should have all the connections that you need. The tv I have has a whole damn switchboard of connections.

I'd keep your DVD player, unless the prices for Blueray movies don't bother you.

As for brand, I would go with Samsung.

is available for Wii if needed. The Samsung listed is 720p and over priced vs. the others on the list.

That was the sound of the smack behind the head I would have gotten if I had a wife. But I don't, so I can say it! Yipee!

So as I was suggesting to you on the weekend Q-Bert, it is time for you to change your wall unit. After all, it is old, and due for an upgrade. You should consider something that can accomodate a 60" tv. Oh, and the tv should support

As for plugs in the back, if it does not have at least 3 times more that your current TV, then don't even consider it. While youre at it, consider getting a Blue Ray player so you can watch Planet Earth in High Def and in

Let's see. What else do you need. Oh yes, a new X Box 360 with Kinect so you can make a fool out of yourself for the whole internet. You do know Microsoft is secretly video taping every body that is playing on front of a Kinect don't you? Wait a minute. Aku has a Kinect. He has been playing with it. AAARRRGH! Video's of Aku prancing in front of his TV will be surfacing soon!

Where was I talking about again? Of yes. Q-Bert's tv upgrade. Now with the new TV and blue ray player, you will need to upgrade your sound system to something that will support HDMI switching. Not like my poc, something that works well, or better. Then of course, there is the couch. You should change them to full lazy boy recliners with build in subwoofers so you can really feel the base.

That's all i can think of off the top of my head.

'cause it's spelled BLEEKER. Not that it matters since I don't think we have 32's advertised at the moment. That being said I'd go Sony ex400 or Panasonic (u22). Is your Rogers box HD? email me for more details...
