Mass Effect 3 Kinect Enabled

This makes me look forward to it even more!!
Revek, SeanMCR are you ready?

Having played some of it for ourselves at CES last week, it's clear that BioWare's done a good job of getting the technology to play nicely with its sci-fi shooter action sequences. Pretty much everything you choose to do can be done from the radial menu with your voice. And in a nice touch, you can say "quick save" to make the game, well, quick save. Take that F6 key!

But there is something odd about voice commands in Mass Effect 3. It's something that makes you take a step back and think, "Maybe I should tone it down a bit." See, you're supposed to be role playing as Commander Shepard, right? So isn't it a little weird to shout "shotgun!" to switch to your boomstick, or "incendiary ammo!" to switch to fire bullets? At that point, aren't you kind of yelling at yourself?

The Kinect voice commands are great for issuing squad orders. If James is playing it too safe, you can yell "James attack!" and he'll charge forward just as you commanded. If you need to get at an enemy pinned behind cover, you can shout "Liara lift!" and she'll instantly turn your foes into a bunch of helplessly floating bull's-eyes. It works; it feels natural. You're Shepard commanding your troops like the space general you are.

But yelling at yourself to open a door instead of hitting the A button per the giant onscreen button prompt? That's a little weird. There's some mild mental instability bubbling beneath the surface there. But, hey, maybe it's just us. Take a look at the demo below and let us know what you think of Mass Effect 3's voice commands in the comments.

EDIT: I guess I should have mentioned there is a video on the link below

but as the article says, could be weird.

For the most part there shouldn't be any voice commands, unless they get to the point of being able to converse in real time with a character. Well that probably would be weird too.

In other news Mass Effect 3 won't be available on Steam because EA are stupid and want it on Origin.

I agree

The conversation part of it would be weird. But I do like the fact that you can do power wheel functions via voice. ie changing weapons, ammo, some squad commands. In the previous iterations that was a little annoying having to pause and give commands or change weapons all the time. So if it is implemented properly I think it would be quite useful.

Well isn't Origin their store? I am not entirely sure how steam works in the background (ie cost to host etc). But I think as a business and if they have their own medium for distribution may reduce their overhead, no?

Swag's picture

But the problem is that they let other companies (like Direct2Drive) have their games, but not Steam. Battlefield 3 is an example.

I guess it's business though. Still, their sales would be a lot higher if they didn't make their games "exclusive".

Also Origin's user friendly-ness, from what I hear, sucks.

Akuf's picture

I wouldn't know

Though how old is Origin? I have to admit I didn't know about Origin until a little while ago due to reading about discussions regarding BF3.

I am not defending it in anyway as I never used it. But I will say, I have used steam during it's introduction (Orginal release of Half-Life 2, 2004) and it wasn't a very friendly thing back then either. Then again I don't really use it now either so I can't really argue how friendly it is now compared to back then.

Speaking of Half-Life 2. I think they are taking their bloody time with releasing Episode 3!

so it might get better down the road.

Steam was crap when it first came out, not anymore however.

I think EP3 is just going to be Half-Life 3.

The Origin brand has been around for at least 20 years. It was the company of Richard Gariot who published the Ultima series. EA bought them out around the time of Ultima Online I believe. I think they rebranded it to be their online store presence. The logo does not match the old one.

Reading the capitalized print for ME3 on the ordering site is interesting:

INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED FOR PRODUCT ACTIVATION

INTERNET CONNECTION, ORIGIN ACCOUNT, ACCEPTANCE OF PRODUCT AND ORIGIN END USER LICENSE AGREEMENTS, INSTALLATION OF THE ORIGIN CLIENT SOFTWARE (WWW.ORIGIN.COM/ABOUT) AND REGISTRATION WITH ENCLOSED SINGLE-USE SERIAL CODE(S) REQUIRED TO PLAY, ACCESS BONUS CONTENT (IF ANY) AND ACCESS ONLINE SERVICES. SERIAL CODE REGISTRATION IS LIMITED TO ONE ORIGIN ACCOUNT PER SERIAL CODE. SERIAL CODE(S) ARE NON-TRANSFERABLE ONCE USED. EULAS AND ADDITIONAL DISCLOSURES CAN BE FOUND AT WWW.EA.COM/1/PRODUCT-EULAS. EA ONLINE PRIVACY POLICY AND TERMS OF SERVICE CAN BE FOUND AT WWW.EA.COM. YOU MUST BE 13+ TO ACTIVATE SOFTWARE, ACCESS ONLINE FEATURES AND REGISTER FOR AN ORIGIN ACCOUNT. EA MAY RETIRE ONLINE FEATURES, ONLINE SERVICES AND DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT AFTER 30 DAYS NOTICE POSTED ON WWW.EA.COM/2/SERVICE-UPDATES. EA MAY PROVIDE CERTAIN INCREMENTAL CONTENT AND/OR UPDATES FOR NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE, IF AND WHEN AVAILABLE.

It sounds like they are trying to criple the trade in value of the game, as it looks like you cannot play it at all without an activation code.

is for old people!

Get with the times where you don't own anything! Where freedom of expression and fair use are CRUSHED!

Coxxorz's picture

You only get to play as long as THEY think you should. And not before you're 13.

Next they'll restrict you tot playing at certain times of day, like when school is out or bandwidth is cheaper. Gamers only exist by the grace of the software giants, after all.

Stormblade's picture

When I was last on it, it was still crap.

Swag's picture

since you use a Mac.

Coxxorz's picture

Origin won't require you to be connected to it in order to play games.

SeanmcR6's picture

They've already said you would need an Origin account for multiplayer. :(

I went through registration hell with Origin when I got BF3. I don't play on even trying multiplayer until AFTER I've played single player at least twice.

Yes, I'm counting the days.....

In other news...

Why is it that I have to wrap each paragraph individually with the italic tag?

MauriceRevek's picture

Because there is a closing /i tag at the end of each paragraph. Use View Source from Internet Explorer if you want to look at the html.

Now if you are saying that you did not specifically add one in, then it looks like it is the site that is automatically formatiing the content, and adding a closing tag at the br/.
