So instead of my $99 set-top box not supporting AVI files, now my whole TV will be incompatible!
We're good.
I've been holding off getting a new TV for this. Awesome!!
why people even buy these products.
Do they work well? Sure, probably.
But why are apple's products considerably more expensive than their competitors counterparts? Because morons buy it. From a business perspective it's brilliant, not from a consumer one.
I've been tempted to buy apple products (like the ipod) but it's just not worth the extra cost.
If you researched your facts before your wrote drivel, your opinion might be valid.
Spec a Mac, feature to feature and match the build quality. You will find very little difference in price, and of course a massive improvement in functionality. When you do it, compare against the top lines of the PC manufacturers, not their crap stuff.
Anyway, it's a pointless argument. Haters will be haters.
when I bought a Zune.
The equivalent ipod was 30$ more expensive, and didn't include the ability to listen to the radio (which I don't use, but it could come in handy). Both use an annoying program to load your songs, so no difference there.
Tell me why I should have gotten the ipod?
I've had my Zune for 3 years now and it still works perfectly.
Honestly I don't hate Apple, I just feel like I am paying for the brand more than anything else. Like buying a plain white Nike shirt or something.

don't need a new one.
Til Hopa borrows it.
He is correct in some of his statements. I do not have to spend 2K to get a PC with every bell and whistle in the World to keep up with an Apple. And yes, using the same monitor, I can put in a graphics card and it will look just as good as an Apple machine.
The only thing that Apples still out perform a Windows machine on is in video editing. If I am running Linux, then all bets are off.
A good friend of mine just loves his $2500 Mac, for running Windows 7. He has it dual booted in case he wants to edit a movie but that is the only thing he uses it for. He is a database developer and needed an OS where there where actually tools to allow him to do his job.
um, no....Apple is not the best video editing platform anymore, not by a long shot. At work, I run a full $7500 Mac Pro tower for video editing....at home, I custom built a video editing PC....for $3400. My PC is faster than the mac at almost everything...except pure CPU tasks like rendering. Everything else...like USING it, editing, photoshop, etc....is much faster on the PC.
however, also...no...the Apple monitors are the best out there. Period. That's why they are so expensive (plus a markup for the name). Full 180/180 viewing angle, matte finish, fairly even backlight (compared to most). The last gen 24 and 30 inch monitors were awesome. For pro photo and video work, there is nothing else to touch them unless you want to spend $1500-$3000 for an Eizo or similar pro colour monitor. Dell makes 1 seriously wicked monitor...but it was released 14 month after the mac ones.
The iPod is the best music player, not just due to hardware, but the MASSIVE music library that's available. The two go hand in hand. The Zune (v2) was great...but only mac haters and people with huge MP3 libraries bought it....which is why it's dead.
Deciding what to buy isn't just a spec sheet though...there are lots of great products (on spec) that actually SUCK to use. Apple gets this.
Hate Apple all you want...they have the whole "customer experience" down pat. THAT is why they pull such huge profits...not because everyone that buys them is an idiot.
Would I buy an Apple TV? Probably not....but you know what? BECAUSE of Apple TV...ALL TVs will become better, smarter and more functional. So when you (eventually) get a slick Samsung or Sharp TV that does all the smart things we want from a TV, you should thank Apple.
Having friends who do film editing for Hollywood they are on either a linux box or a MAC. Perhaps for your scenario the PC is best, which I think is great.
Not sure about the mention for monitors. all I said was that a PC can keep up with a MAC as far as video display quality, speed, etc.
The iPod I love. It is the one thing from Apple that I really do like. The massive music library is available for any media device. I but all my MP3s from Amazon and not Apple.
Apples marketing is very good, plus they sue the hell out of everyone in an attempt to keep competition down. I would argue about the people buying them not being idiots to some degree. :)
There are other companies out there who are doing amazing things with TV's. In North America we just don't always get to see them for a variety of reasons.
Apple does some things very well, but they also muff up a lot. You want an easy system to crack into, think Apple.
What database does he use? Because I know lots of dba's who love their Mac for development. Of the big dbs, only MSSQL doesn't have strong OSX tools. Really, no big surprise there.
And actually, the most important area Apple outperforms everyone is product integration. Yes, you need to mostly buy Apple products for this, but they have never denied that. Apple is what it is and you either drink the Cool-Aid or you don't I find the simple, straightforward integration of ALL of my devices to be a massive benefit to me.
He uses Oracle, MS-SQL, TeraData and some of the cloud variations. I would be interested in what databases these dba's you know are developing for and what tools they are using. I would not be surprised to hear they are running a VM for windows or Linux.
Why would Microsoft worry about creating anything for OS X for MS-SQL? There is not enough market share there to warrant it.
I saw something very interesting last week. A woman was attending a meeting I was at and had a Windows phone. (Don't start, M$ screwed up big here). What was neat about it she pulled up on her phone what her kids were playing on the X-BOX at the time and found out they were playing a game she told them not to. I think it was WAW-3. She then turned off the X-BOX from her phone. I thought this was very cool. Microsoft is working to integrate things more on the consumer side and from what I have seen of Windows 8, they will be making some quantum leaps.
I have to admit I was impressed that they actually came out with an official Xbox Live app for iOs, but remote shutdown takes the cake. I would lobby MS for this feature too if I didn't think certain people here would abuse the hell out of it.
...can NEVER, EVER know about this!
Stormblade, if Crapple put out a brick called it the iBrick, you would probably buy it too, right?
My point it is, their crap is over priced, they lock you down. It's like being married to them. And, I personally don't like being tied down, forced to use something I don't want to use. This is why whether it's a cell phone contract, relationship with a girl, technology that forces you to use useless crap, I just won't submit nor be controlled by anything.
Unfortunately, there are things (Government, laws etc.) that I have no choice but to submit, but that is a different conversation that I don't want to get into.
So you can have your crapple products and submit to their machine. Now, though I am not a fan of the Motorola Xoom but their Superbowl commercial last year was absolutely brilliant! Really explains how the iDrones are.
In case you missed it here it is
So the Microsoft platform is completely open?
I like how the Xoom commercial is a ripoff of Apple's 1984 Superbowl commercial. Very clever.
No Microsoft is not open but I am not a big MS fan either.
But when talking about MP3 players. Like Crapple the Zune also required some crap software to use it which also turned me off of it.
I have a creative Zen, and to quote Stormblade "it just works" but the difference is I don't need some crap software to use it. I just plug it in and guess what no matter what device I plug it into it becomes a drive. I can drag and drop, copy and paste, delete all without using some crap software that forces you to sync, controls how you do stuff.
Of course there are some drawbacks to having "open" devices, especially if your a moron (users that download whatever without knowing repercussions, click on links mindlessly etc). But IMO being a power user the perks of being "open" far outweighs the drawbacks.
As for your comment about the commercial. I have no idea what commercial they copied but that wasn't the point I was trying to make. The point was that I do like the message the commercial portrays that the world is filled with iDrones, break the chains!
Just watched it. Assuming you are talking about the video below.
I will say very clever also especially since it is based on George Orwell's book.
So in hindsight, Apple didn't "free" society from IBM they just became another big brother. Of course, society will continue to bow to all these big brothers (ie Apple, Google, Microsoft, IBM, Governments, Hollywood etc.) because this is what society has become, drones that bend to the will of these powers that be. Fortunately, I don't bend to anyone, unfortunately, in some cases I have no choice and forced comply. Too bad the world doesn't see it like I do, because these "big brothers" would no longer have power.
But, alas, I am just one person...
That Apple is the only company where the manufacturing workers are talking about massive suicides because of the way they are treated. Way to go Apple! I won't be surprised if they don't sue the workers families for breach of contract as Apple likes to tie people up in court.
I did forget to mention that... Apologies.
Thanks for the reminder..
For years I had to defend Apple from the high and mighty who all said the products were crap and that's why only a few 'fanatics' ever bought them. Now they're Big Brother because the mindset, which has NEVER wavered by the way and has never been denied, was to make amazing products with as close to seamless interoperability as could be possible with these types of devices.
You can all go on hating, while I, with my Apple products, go on being able to do way more, faster and easier than you can ever dream of doing with your junk.
And as for the work conditions in the Chinese factories, Apple is no different than any of the other uberpowerful multinationals that have persecute and demeaned most of the Asian countries for years. Their governments have to have the balls to protect them or it will never change. I am not saying anything about Apple being a better corporate citizen than anyone else. Frankly, Bill Gates is by far and away the top of the tech billionaires when it comes to altruism, but I still will never own another computer with Winblows on it.
I mean, look at Steve Jobs who was the one who basically set Apple's superior than though attitude. The only high tech person who is a bigger douche is Larry Ellison from Oracle.
Strangely enough we have not had any reports from other manufacturers factories where the workers are wanting to commit suicide. To me, that says volumes.
Now for your statement of your Apple stuff making you able to do way more, faster and easier than I can ever dream of doing with my junk. If you are doing things so much faster and easier, then why the hell haven't you released your second book? Waiting for Sari to write it?
Except those factories also assemble products for Dell, Motorola, HP and many more.
