In the top 10 list of best movies of the year.
According to them, the #1 movie was Wall-E, and most of the rest I've never even heard of.
but it will sometime this month.
That will be another good one.
In my biased opinion it was very well done. Awesome really.
Some of the suspense could have been improved, and overall I think the story could have been 'expanded' a little more, but it was still very interesting. I also enjoyed the trancendental, non-linear story.
Great performance by Van Damme, I always said that he can act, given the chance (and the right script).
You also have to take into consideration:
1) Not an action movie
2) Not an America movie (sorry A-Trol, but the majority of stuff comming out of Hollywood is rehashed material. The only original stuff seems to be when the remake a European movie)
3) It's a European movie
4) It's in French, wich is JCVD native language, therefore much easier for him to speak.
I liked the part where he is talking to his agent about his next gig, only to be told that he lost the part to Stephen Segal. The reason? Stephen agreed to cut off his pony tail.
Is it an Oscar contender? No. Is it a good story? Yes, very. Is it well acted? Yes, again very. The supporting actors are also very good. Which is also typical of French actors (French from France that is.) After seeing this movie, I would love to see JCVD do a movie with Jean Renaud and/or Gerard Dépardieu. I think they could also make a very good comedy trio. So long as it is a French made/directed movie. The dialogue / interaction that these three could have would be verry good.
I also give it
but you are right about a great deal of the garbage out of Hollywood. It is unoriginal and/or broing. There are a few good movies that come out of Hollywood, but not many.
I just can't imagine ever saying that JCVD being considered worth watching. I didn't watch the trailer, I am sitting in a boring meeting with a bunch of boring execs. Maybe this is some sophisticated tounge in cheek French humor that I am missing.
And you didn't even bother watching the trailer...
All you old men need a change.
By saying the executives in the room with me are boring? It is the truth!
I did not say the movie was bad, all I said was that I am surprised that anyone would say a movie with JCVD was worth watching.
made it seem that you were prejudging the movie.
" I just can't imagine ever saying that JCVD being considered worth watching." Mind you, the sentence doesn't really make sense anyway :P
I can understand that people would be skeptical of a JCVD movie would be "good". But this movie was completely different from his past work.
about Amelie when it came out. There are just some really good foreign films out there. JCVD is one of them.
Obviously, some people just don't like things that a different. Which I guess is ok.
But like Revek said it has JCVD in it which makes me bias.
That being said I will agree a lot of foreign films are great. I mean look at In Bruges great dark humour movie. But unfortunately didn't even make the theatres here in North America are at least not very many.
The biggest stumbling block, is that JCVD is in the movie, and people cannot seem to dissassociate the B action movie actor from the one in this movie.
Granted, we are talking about the actor who has made more 'twin' movies than any other actor out there. And when I saw twin, I mean movies where he plays 2 roles which are twin brothers. Now was this to reduce the cost of the movie, or get more face time, who knows. I seem to recal a movie where he was a triplet. I think the only other actor that can rival him in creating characters that give him more screen time, is Eddie Murphy with his familly protrayals in the Nutty Professor movies.
The other thing that may be holding them back is, well, we would not really be above trying to con everybody into seeing a horrendous movie by telling them how great it was, but this is not the case. Besides, Stormblade is a self admitted bad movie lover. Just on that bassis allone he should have been first in line to see this movie for the minute possibility that it could have been bad.
But no, he will just sit at home, play Uno and let a good movie pass him by.
Also, I daresay that this movie is a good chick flick. [gets ready for the innumberable flames soon to flood the site], and would not hesitate to bring a date to this movie [gets ready for round 2 of flames, hope the server can handle it].
First off, the reason why Van-Damme did so many "twin" movies, is that one character can't contain all the awesomeness of Jean-Claude. Therefore, they had to make him play two characters.
Secondly, ... I fail to see how this is a chick flick in any sense. Was there love and romance, no. Was there crying, ... ok ... one tear, that doesn't count. Was there lots pink in the movie, no. Christ, what else is in a typical chick flick .... Revek can you please elaborate.
....is that you have a knack for watching and buying terrible movies. What was the stupid movie you bought with Banderas and Jolie and I told you not to but went ahead anyway? Because you thought the 3 second side boob shot of Jolie was worth $20 or whatever it was.
I guess. But like I said, I was siting beside a girl. Does that count?
This is why you took yourself to the movie. All is now clear.
I went with him.
But I was beside a girl.
I can;t check myself all the time.
Well I went to go see JCVD last night.
This was a spectacular movie. Not really what I was expecting to see. I don't watch previews/trailers. So I was not quite sure what I was getting into. Thankfully, it was totally awesome.
I laughed my ass off at the Segal comments, and John Woo. Woo wouldn't exist if it where not for Jean-Claud, thats the truth.
I feel a bit bad for all those English speakers though, I was reading some of the sub-titles and they where not the greatest. To fully appreciate the movie you should really know french.
It was a tad short. But then again, all Van-Damme movies are too short.
I also give it a:
To prevent Q-Bert from having to deal with angry lawyer letters from Australia, the stolen rating paws graphics have been replaced with original, authentic HOC Rating Paws©.
To avoid having to write "out of five" every time, and for the benefit of the html-challenged among you (above poster included), there are 5 versions of the rating graphic, named thusly:

Or 3.5...
...and commit to a whole number. Otherwise we might as well have ten paws on there.
Let's make it out of 100 so that the crack HoC movie critics can really be accurate about their interpretation of the movie in question.
Go play Uno in the traffic. At night. With dark camouflage clothing.
Or better yet, go in the forest with a big uncooked roast tied around your neck, and blow a horn that sounds like a wounded doe.
I fart in your general direction!
Uncouth knave!
I was hoping that someone would make those. My specialty isn't graphic design, especially icons.
Any graphic requests, just send them my way. We also do vector art, photo retouching, Flash, and a bit of 3D.
I had briefly debated seeing this movie, but after it getting good reviews from you two, I know I don't need to.
Now I just need Noir to give it a good review to know it's a 'must miss'.
It really is...
On a side note, me and Revek almost had to walk (or bus) home as we parked under a Loblaws, but they closed the gate at 10pm (unbeknownst to us). Of course the movie ended at about 11pm.
Luckily for us, an employee from Loblaws was just leaving and he let us out, without having to pay for parking as well.
If JCVD was there, he would have roundhouse kicked that gate down.
The garage would have stayed open until he was done.
And why wouldn't you park in the proper place, anyway? What are you guys... 17?
Was at the Bytown. Street parking wa full, Loblaws was open, and they had sign that indicated that we could park there. they just omitted the sign that indicated that the parkign sloces at 10. The sign was put there after the door closed.
I'll be watching this is theatres for SURE!
It is a revelation frankly. Should call it The Quest 2.
I am starting to think Revek is rubbing off on you buddy.
Seek therapy quick before it is too late!
SHAAaDUuup!
Stupid Pleb.
Look here, it's supposed to be a good movie:

But it's still JCVD. Why on Earth would you waste any time, valuable or otherwise, watching something with him in it? Next you'll be singing the virtues of Valkyrie.
You two never cease to amaze me.
You must be joking, I am not a fan of Tom Cruise.
Sounds like an intriguing satire of the genre. Might be worth downloading.
