Nintendo DS, the greatest? Oh indeed it is true!

By Noir - Posted on 16 November 2007

I have owned both the original (blue) DS and the newer DS lite (white). Now sure there are times where I don't play my DS for a long time. That is usually because a) I am too good at gaming and beat the awesome games I buy in no time flat, or b) I am usually waiting for a specific game to come out, so I entertaint myself with PC games in the meantime.

Until PC gets their act back together (I believe there needs to be WAY less cross platform games for PC [consoles are just bringing PC games down]) I truly agree that my favorite gaming system to date has been the Nintendo DS. I use to bring it on the bus everyday when I was going to school. I would play it multiplayer with some friends in our appartment over the wifi. Not to mention Nintendo has brought back Megaman and soon to be the newest Contra (number 4) from the grave. Do I dare mention the positive effects that Brain Age has brought to everyone who plays it ?

Eitherway, I am sure most of you are like, ooooh but Noir you are just a Nintendo Fanboy. To this I respond, yes I love Nintendo. Both for the sheer high quality of their hardware and the views they have on game development. Also, just to let everyone know, I have played on pretty much every Console system for the last 15 years except for a PS3. Being a fan of anime and RPGs, I liked the playstation systems. Often quickly planned get togethers to game usually involved just bringing and xbox or 2 isn't oh everyone hauling their PCs to one persons place. Finally, for casual, quick gaming and or getting together with people who aren't "hardcore" everyday gamers there was Nintendo with games like Mario Party (which everyone can play).

So I must agree with this article entirely, not to mention ... another NEW DS!? oh Hells Yah! http://blogs.cnet.com/8301-13506_1-9818306-17.html

The main reason why Nintendo are in the console lead right now is because they know how to appeal to a broad demographic (basically, everyone) and they make games that are fun and innovative, not rehashed cookie cutter ones.

Let's look at the NDP sales figures for consoles (October, North America):

Wii - 519,000
Nintendo DS - 458,000
Xbox 360 - 366,000
PSP - 286,000
PlayStation 2 - 184,000
PlayStation 3- 121,000

While the Wii is in the lead this month, usually the DS is the clear winner (and it's not too far behind the Wii). And while the Xbox numbers look good, before August (and the price cut and Halo 3), their sales were more around 100,000 (the DS was still doing 500,000+ a month).

Note: Stupid PS3

Also, the number one selling game was still Halo 3 (433,800 units). But in september sales were at 3.3 million, suggesting that only select "hardcore" gamers picked it up immediately and so sales probably will die off quite quickly.

This is in contrast to most Nintendo games and don't sell extremely well extremely quickly (and don't use the marketing fist of God that Microsoft uses), but continue to sell well over time. For example, New Super Mario Bros. as of September 30, 2007, has sold 11.5 million copies worldwide. And this game continues to sell well (it was also the 2nd top selling game of 2006).

I predict that Halo 3 won't sell over 10 million worldwide (Halo 2 has about 8 million).

Silence the discord!
